The 1996 floods revealed major channel and bank stability weaknesses in both drainages; the compromised stability was caused by mismanagement of flood prone/riparian area, and by channel straightening during road construction. Watershed Consulting was hired to evaluate existing channel pattern and hydraulic geometry and to provide a channel rehabilitation plan providing for future channel stability, bedload transport and fish habitat. After an evaluation and Total Station Survey, plans were prepared and an emergency partial channel rehabilitation done on Clear Creek. The 1997 record floods validated the design and construction and further restoration was done during fall 1997. Again, the restored reaches functioned well during 1998 runoff. A Rootwad bank stabilization technique was used to provide scour pool habitat and overhead cover, and coir biologs were used where excavator work was not necessary. Revegetation with appropriate woody species using variety of planting techniques assured natural flood prone area stability.
