In May 2018, Watershed Consulting won a contract to construct 1300 linear feet of new channel for Brown’s Gulch in Rocker, MT. The aim of the project was to reintroduce the stream to its historical floodplain, from which it was moved for agricultural production in the 1960’s. Watershed Consulting worked closely with the state of Montana, Confluence Consulting of Bozeman, and the land owner to restore this reach. Our crew began by harvesting mature live willow and sod mats from the old channel. The new channel was excavated, and the banks were stabilized using a combination of the harvested willow, sod mats, soil lifts, and juniper brush fascines & root wads. Excavated material was placed in the old channel and graded. The project was capped with the planting of 4,000 containerized plants in the floodplain.
